The next few days will see us move into the high altitude city Cuzco and onto Machu Picchu. Below are a few facts about the Inca.
* Domesticated the Llama, Alpaca and Guinea Pigs.
* Originally domesticated and cultivated maize, tomato, cashew, peanut, coca, hot peppers, squash, manioc, cassava, pineapple and the potato – not the Irish.
* Experts at irrigating crops.
* Around the time of Christ, the Nazca were driving tunnels into hillsides in the South of Peru for the purpose of irrigation.
* The Inca ruled from the present day Columbia and Ecuador in the north to central Chile in the south. The Inca lands were the equivalent of a European empire extending from the coldest of Norway to the mountains of north-west Africa.
* Inca roads stretched over 23,000km – long enough to cross Asia at its largest width.
This was to eventually aid the Spanish in conquering the Incas.
* Cuzco was the Inca capital.
* The Inca conducted a census of each locality every year, accumulating the finest population statistics the world had known up to that time.
* The Inca did not have the wheel.
* The Inca had a high respect of women. The moon was the goddess of females. The moon presided over the fertility of women.
* The Inca successfully transfused blood long before it was practised anywhere else in the world.
* Experts in surgery. They could cut a segment of bone from the skull of a wounded or sick patient, or scrape clean the bone in its set position without damaging the brain.
* When the Spanish arrived they unknowingly brought smallpox with them. It raced ahead of their advancing army killing many of the Inca. The Spanish army were simply able to walk into most Inca cites without resistance.
