Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) said Tuesday it will invest 1.3 million dollars to publicize the "Cusco Pone" (Cusco Rocks) campaign in some Latin American countries, with the purpose of attracting more visitors to this Andean region.

“We are working with the private sector to extend the Cusco Pone campaign to Latin America countries, and yesterday (Monday) we were discussing how much money we will allocate,” said Peru's Trade and Tourism Minister Martin Perez.

The campaign will be launched first in Chile, Argentina and Brazil, and then in other countries of the region.

Minister Perez praised the great success of the campaign since its nationwide launch on February 10, with 12,000 air ticket reservations to Cusco in the first five days. The campaign has so far helped to arrange 45,000 air ticket reservations until June this year.

Tourism activity to Machu Picchu was suspended last Monday following torrential rainfall, mudslides and flooding that blocked the railway into the Unesco World Heritage Site and stranded some 2,000 tourists at Machu Picchu Pueblo – the town below the citadel.

Repairs to the train line between Ollantaytambo and Machu Picchu Pueblo are expected to be completed by the beginning of April. Service to Aguas Calientes from the station at Piscacucho (where the trail head to the Inca Trail is located at Km82) is expected to be back up and running before the end of March.
